Akshara, a non-profit, women’s organisation has been active in taking the issue of violence against women for the past 16 years.
Its many programs include:- - supporting a police helpline, 103, for women to report violence
- - bringing out a Women’s Resource Directory for 4 cities
- - a website www.standupagainstwomen.org for women in distress
- - a booklet and video on sexual harassment in colleges
- - an in depth survey on Harassment in the city and numerous Safety Walks to spot unsafe areas and lobby for prevention.
The recent petition, Safe Mumbai, has received support from more than 19,000 signatories who are asking Chief Minister of Maharashtra to come up with a comprehensive plan for safety of women.
